Dying
I heard a fly buzz when I died;
The stillness round my form
Was like the stillness in the air
Between the heaves of storm.
The eyes beside had wrung them dry,
And breaths were gathering sure
For that last onset, when the king
Be witnessed in his power.
I willed my keepsakes, signed away
What portion of me I
Could make assignable,-and then
There interposed a fly,
Between the light and me;
And then the windows failed, and then
I could not see to see.
The last stanza really is great : ) It is very interesting how she chooses to focus solely on this fly and its movements with her last conscious thoughts.
What are some of your favorite poems?!
Oh, man, my last comment didn't post here?! Well, awesome poem. My favorite Emily Dickinson is "I Died for Beauty." Others are Jack Gilbert, "i Imagine the Gods", Frank O'Hara's "Five Poems" from the "Lunch Poems" collection. 2 short ones I like to recite from time to time, Edna St. Vincent Millay's "First Fig" and "Second Fig". So many good ones!
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for "If" -- Rudyard Kipling.
